State Employees Association of NC

SEANC is a unified body of 55,000 active and retired state employees working to achieve common goals through group action. SEANC (pronounced 'nĭk) is the largest non-union public employees association in the nation, representing all who are employed by the State of North Carolina, or who have retired from state service.

The association's top priority is the protection and enhancement of the rights and benefits of state employees. Association and state employee issues include pay, health care, retirement and job security, among others. SEANC members provide direction for the association. Their involvement guides the ongoing development of the SEANC Policy Platform, which defines legislative goals and sets the Association's legislative agenda.

In SEANC, state employees have a friend, a spokesman and a time-tested advocate. Realizing its immense occupational value, thousands have joined in the spirit of accomplishment through collective action.

NC State A.F.L. - C.I.O.

The North Carolina State AFL-CIO is an organization made up of local unions from across north Carolina. Just as joining together at the workplace gives workers a stronger voice, so too joining together at a statewide level gives working people a stronger voice on issues that affect them and their families which are decided at levels beyond the workplace.

The mission of the NC State AFL-CIO is to improve the lives of working families–to bring economic justice to the workplace and social justice to our nation. To accomplish this mission we will build and change the state's labor movement.

The NC State AFL-CIO will...

  • create a broad understanding of the need to organize among union members, our leadership and among unorganized workers.
  • fight for an agenda for working families at all levels of government.
  • build a broad progressive coalition that speaks out for social and economic justice.
  • transform the role of the union from an organization that focuses on a member's contract to one that gives workers a say in all the decisions that affect their lives.
  • make the voices of working families heard across our state.

American Fed. of Teachers/NC

AFT began in North Carolina in the mid seventies as a response to dissatisfaction with how teachers were, and still are, being represented. In contrast to other teacher organizations, AFT believes that there is a conflict of interest in representing both teachers and supervisors, principals and other administrators. The American Federation of Teachers/North Carolina represents all education employees who are not employed in a supervisory capacity: teachers, assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, and others.

While collective bargaining remains a long sought goal, our power must come from political action and effective advocacy for what we believe is best for education and for children, both locally and throughout the state.

We are proud to have been the only teacher organization to have supported our Governor Mike Easley in both the initial primary battles and in the general election.

AFT/NC believes we must:

  • Recruit and retain the best teachers; this means competitive salaries as well as other supports to ensure that every child has a competent and caring teacher;
  • Reduce class size, especially in kindergarten through third grades when children must master the basics of reading and math;
  • Upgrade the teacher assistant salary schedule so that these hard working individuals are rewarded for their education and experience;
  • Close the achievement gap for minority students, and support students with limited English proficiency;
  • Insist on authentic assessments that encourage high standards without becoming the sole determinant for promotion;
  • Provide every 4 year old with access to a quality early childhood preschool program.

Teamsters (IBT) Local 391

We are approximately 8,000 working men and women living and working in Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina.

We have a long and proud history of being a pro-active union, leading the fight in the work place, the State capital and in the U.S. Congress to further the interest of all working people.

We are people with a profound love for God, country and family. Giving of our selves and our resources to help others has become our way of life. Thus, the slogan, "PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE" has been our slogan since the 90’s and it will be our motto for the year 2000 and beyond.

Our successes have come from being united in a nurturing family. Collectively, we obtain more for our labor than we could ever hope to achieve standing alone.

IUPA

The International Union of Police Associations is the only AFL-CIO union chartered exclusively for law enforcement and law enforcement support personnel. The AFL-CIO affiliation places IUPA in a position of strength within the labor movement. While IUPA's officers, active and retired law enforcement officers, fight to improve the lives of their brothers and sisters in law enforcement, IUPA works to improve legislation that protects and affects public safety officers, as well as representing the needs of law enforcement officers and support personnel, whether that be for better equipment, more staff or a fair wage.

"Speaking with one voice, Moving with one Purpose," IUPA supports law enforcement and corrections officers in addition to support personnel.

NCAE

Founded in 1970, the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) represents nearly 70,000 educators throughout North Carolina. As a collective voice of public school employees in the state, NCAE advocates daily for the economic security and well-being of workers in the field of education, including those who have retired from the classroom.

NCAE remains committed to strengthening the legal status of public school employees by ensuring them a meaningful role in the decision-making process. NCAE is proud to be a member of the H.O.P.E. Coalition as we work together to value those who educate our state's most precious resource, North Carolina's children.
